cube initialModeling a perfect soccer ball in 10 seconds.

Soccer balls are one of the most wanted items, at least here in Germany.
At first glance it seems to be a complicated modeling task, but it can be done in a snap.

This tutorial is referring to 3ds max, you can click on the images to enlarge them.

creating the hedra creating the hedra
  • go to the create panel, select "extended primitives" from the dropdown menu and create a hedra
  • set family to dodec/icos
  • set the radius to 40
  • set the family parameter "P" to 0.37
  • leave the rest to default values
  • maybe you've already got a clue
splitting the edges splitting the edges
  • apply an "edit poly" modifier (or convert to poly)
  • go to sub object "edges", select all edges and choose "split", this leaves you with single polygons
  • be sure to select all polygons and quit the sub object mode
first meshsmooth first meshsmooth
  • apply a mesh smooth modifier and set the iterations to 3
spherify spherify
  • apply a "spherify" modifier
face extrude face extrude
  • apply a "face extrude" modifier, set the amount to 0.6
second meshsmooth second meshsmooth
  • apply another "mesh smooth" modifier, this time set the subdivision method to "quad output", leave the iterations to 1.
cap holes
  • optionally apply a "cap holes" modifier to close the little gaps in the polygon corners.
Finished Soccer Ball
  • Hey, you're done.
  • Depending on your needs you can raise or lower the iterations value of the first mesh smooth to get a coarser or higher resolution model.
Material Shaded Soccer Ball Thanks to the hedra object assigning material ids to the polys by default, you can simply assign a multi/sub-object material to the ball and you'll get the classical black and white thing.
Soccer Ball Diadora Style Feel free to experiment with different values, invent new patterns and create some nice textures. Who knows, next championship we'll see your design on the pitch. Let me see your results or just leave me a note.
For example you can achieve the pattern which Diadora uses in their "Janus" ball, just by selecting different hedra parameters.
